Grape Ranch, one of Oklahoma's most popular wineries, is moving operations to Dallas. Brothers Jack and Dan Whiteman founded the winery in 2004. They live in Dallas and want to spend more time with their families.
About 50 tons of Oklahoma grapes will go to waste this year because most of the state's wineries are buying bulk wine or juice concentrate from elsewhere, say state wine officials. "It's cheaper to buy bulk wine from California and put it in a bottle than it is to grow grapes in Oklahoma and bottle true Oklahoma wine," said one.
From the Oklahoman newspaper: "As in any emerging industry we need to prove our wine’s quality and value. Our wines are winning awards at nationally accredited wine competitions. ...We hope that more restaurants and retail outlets will recognize our achievements and consider carrying our products and supporting our developing industry."
Retired pathologist George Ingels and wife Jane are eager for their first harvest in their Oklahoma vineyard. "Rule No. 1,” says George: "Don’t cut off your fingers.” No. 2: "If you do, don’t bleed on the grapes.”
